1The footwell gap is the whole problem

Most "hammock" covers clip to the front and rear headrests and hang a sheet of fabric between them. Under the sheet is the footwell — a hole. Every time your dog shifts, the fabric dips into it. She can feel that before you can see it, and it's why she circles, braces against the door and never quite lies down.

2"Waterproof" is the wrong layer to ask about

Every listing shouts about the waterproof layer. Fine — they all have one. The layer that decides whether your dog settles is the one almost nobody mentions: a rigid polypropylene plate that sits in a sleeve over the footwell. This cover has six layers; the third is that plate. The supplier rates it at 440 lb / 200 kg. That's their number from their spec sheet — we haven't load-tested it ourselves, and we'd rather say so than pretend.

3Door to door, or the hair finds the gap

A cover that stops at the seat edge leaves a two-inch strip of upholstery on either side, and that strip is exactly where a dog leans. The side flaps on this one run up the door panel and fasten there, so the seat, the footwell and the door edges are one continuous surface. Hair and mud land on the cover, and the cover comes out and gets shaken.

Unfolded it's 80.9 × 64.6 inches (205.5 × 164 cm), which covers the rear bench of most sedans, SUVs and crossovers with room to spare.
