7 things nobody tells you before you buy a dog grooming vacuum.
We read through the category's reviews on Chewy and Amazon before we chose the kit we sell. These are the seven things that decide whether one of these ends up in a cupboard. Ours is at the bottom of the page with the rows where it loses — or skip straight to the kit ($109.95, 60-day keep-it guarantee) →
1. The bin is the spec that matters most, and it's the one nobody leads with.
Suction gets the headline. The bin decides your session. A double-coated dog in shedding season fills a 1-litre bin fast, and one of the most common complaints we found was the kit clogging or stopping mid-groom. Look for the bin size before the pascals. If a page doesn't state it, that's the answer.
2. Every decibel number is the manufacturer's.
You'll see 42 dB, 52 dB, 65 dB. None of those brands publishes a test method, and neither does our supplier. Treat the number as a ceiling claim, not a measurement, and assume the top suction mode is louder than the number. What matters is whether your dog tolerates it, which brings us to —
3. The dog decides, not the spec sheet.
Some dogs accept a vacuum running next to them within a session. Some never will. Reviews split hard on this and it has nothing to do with the brand. If you buy one: low mode, short sessions, treats, and the tool switched on near the dog before it touches the dog. If you already know your dog bolts from the household vacuum, the honest answer is probably don't.
4. The "compare-at" price is the sale that never ends.
On the day we checked, one kit was "$84.99, was $129.99", another "$159.99, was $249.99", another "$199.99, was $333". Those crossed-out numbers are not prices anyone paid recently. Judge the kit at the price it's actually sold at, and ignore the theatre.
5. The return policy is the return shipping policy.
"30-day returns" means: repack the box, print a label, get it to a depot, wait for inspection, wait for the refund. Most people don't, which is why it's written that way. Before you buy anything in this category, find the sentence about who pays to ship it back and whether you need the original box.
6. It does not stop shedding. Anyone who says it does is selling.
A grooming vacuum changes where the hair ends up — in a bin instead of on the floor, the couch and the car. The dog sheds exactly as much. If a page promises "less shedding", read the rest of it more carefully.
7. The clipper attachment is either on the suction line or it's a toy.
Several kits include a clipper. The useful question is whether the clipper head has its own vacuum pickup, so trimmed hair goes down the hose too. If it doesn't, you're back to sweeping — you just paid more for it.
